of Post-graduate Studies Master of Arts in
History
The programme is offered by
the Department of History,
under the Faculty
of Post Graduate Studies, at the Kwaluseni
Campus. In order to be admitted to the
programme, you need to meet these requirements.
The M.A. in History shall consist of course
work (Part I) and supervised research (Part 2) on
an approved topic. Course work/written papers and
thesis shall be examined separately, and there
shall be no overall classification or grade
(except pass/fail) given to the M.A. Degree.
Students shall be expected to devote equal
attention to the thesis and to course work/written
papers. Course work is designed to prepare the
students for research and writing scholarly
history by exposure to advanced historiography and
appropriate methodology. The normal duration
course work for full time students shall be two
semesters and for part time students it shall be
four semesters.

Economic History of Africa
Comparative History of Slavery
Politics in Africa since 1945
Comparative History of the
Peasantry Gender
Society in Africa
Comparative Labour History
Theory and History of Capitalism
and
Imperialism
In addition to compulsory courses, full or half
optional courses, related to history, offered by
other departments, may be approved by the
Department of History for purposes of fulfilling
the requirements of the programme. A student may
also be allowed to audit a course at either
graduate or undergraduate level if this will be
deemed appropriate to his research interests.
