Gracias a ellas supimos que Vanunu sería liberado el 21 de abril. En su última carta la Hna.Ardeth escribió: “Prendí la TV para ver y rezar las noticias de la mañana y allí estaba Mordecai Vanunu caminando hacia fuera de la prisión, las manos en el aire enviando señales de paz para el mundo. Quedé sin aire viéndolo libre después de 18 años encarcelado, la mayoría en prisión solitaria, por haber revelado la verdad del programa de armas nucleares de Israel”.   Cuando fr.João Xerri programó una visita a Palestina durante la Semana Santa del año pasado, consultó a uno de los líderes del Movimiento de los Campesinos Sin Tierra – MST – en Brasil y un buen amigo nuestro: João Pedro Stédile. João Pedro dijo a fr. João que era muy importante que él contactase la abogada Yael Lotan, del Movimiento por un Oriente Medio Libre de Artefactos Nucleares, muy amiga de Vanunu. Gracias al informe de fr. João y de la Hna.Margaret Ormond acerca de su visita conjunta, nos dimos cuenta de lo que Vanunu estaba sufriendo: 18 años en la cárcel, más de 11 en solitaria...   Al principio de abril de este año, tuvimos otro encuentro con Stédile, en el que hablamos de la inminente salida de Vanunu de la prisión y de lo que podríamos / deberíamos hacer sobre eso. Estábamos particularmente preocupados / as con su vida, porque supimos que un de los más grandes periódicos de Israel había hecho una encuesta sobre el futuro de Vanunu. Una de las 3 posibilidades era “que lo matasen” y 30% de los lectores habían escogido esta.   Contactamos Juliana Bertolucci, joven periodista, miembro de la parroquia dominicana en São Paulo, que preparó un dossier sobre Vanunu. Stédile, contactó al senador Eduardo Suplicy del PT (Partido de los Trabajadores), conocido por su solidaridad y juntos decidieron hablar con el Rabí Henri Sobel, la más importante autoridad israelí en São Paulo, una vez que el consulado fue cerrado. Sobel aceptó  recibirnos el viernes 23 de abril y fue organizada una delegación: Stédile y un grupo de jóvenes miembros de MST, senador Suplicy, una asesora de Luis Eduardo Greenhalgh, diputado federal del PT, Rose Nogueira de Tortura Nunca Más, Luis Bassegio del Grito de los Excluidos / as, dos periodistas: Juliana y Bia Barbosa de la agencia de noticias Carta Maior, además de fr. João y yo, del Grupo Solidario Sto.Domingo.   Habíamos preparado una petición pidiendo libertad total y seguridad para Vanunu, que sería firmada por todos los miembros de la delegación y entregado a Sobel; antes habíamos logrado conseguir que el Cardinal Arns la firmase también: mismo jubilado, sigue siendo una figura de las más importantes en la defensa de los DDHH.   Rabí Sobel nos recibió; el senador Suplicy presentó a los miembros del grupo, resaltando que “justicia” es una de las palabras más utilizadas en la Biblia. Stédile comentó que Vanunu había recibido el Premio Nobel de la Paz Alternativo, que el MST también había recibido. Como estaba en la cárcel, Stédile habia sido encargado de ir a Israel para entregárselo.   Fr. João habló de su visita el año pasado y de nuestra preocupación por la seguridad de Vanunu, pidiendo a Sobel que entregase nuestra petición a la embajada de Israel en Brasilia. Claudia, joven miembro del MST, entregó a Sobel un ramillete de flores blancas como señal de paz y yo resalté la necesidad de garantizar la vida de Vanunu y le entregué la petición. Finalmente Sobel dijo que sería nuestro mensajero, llevando la petición a Brasilia. Mientras esperábamos en el ascensor, fr. João dijo a Sobel que muchos profetas en la Biblia habían sido considerados como traidores... y que si el juicio de Vanunu podía ser considerado imparcial y justo, entonces los juicios de activistas durante la dictadura militar en Brasil – contra los cuales Sobel, el Cardenal Arns, fr.João y muchas otras personas habían protestado fuertemente – también habían sido imparciales y justos!   Pensamos que una de las acciones que podemos y debemos hacer es dar visibilidad a las acciones corajosas, significativas y relevantes de otros, como Vanunu, las tres hermanas dominicas encarceladas en los Estados Unidos y tantas otras personas. Así se propaga la Buena Noticia del Reino y se obedece a lo que dijo Pedro, sobre dar cuenta de nuestra esperanza (cf. 1 Pe. 3, 15). Personas como Mordechai Vanunu nos recuerdan la discusión de Abrahán con Diós (cf.Gn. 18, 22-32). Thanks to them we became aware that Vanunu would be released on the 21 April. In her last letter, Sister Ardeth wrote: “I turned on the TV to watch and pray the morning news and there was Mordecai Vanunu walking out of prison, hands in the air flashing peace signs to the world. I was breathless seeing him free after 18 years imprisoned, mostly in solitary confinement, for revealing the truth of Israel’s nuclear weapons program.”   When fr.João Xerri planned to go to Palestine during Holy Week last year, he consulted one of the leaders of the Landless Peasants Movement – MST – in Brazil, and a good friend of ours: João Pedro Stédile. João Pedro told fr. João he simply had to contact lawyer Yael Lotan of the Nuclear Free Middle East Movement and close friend of Vanunu. Thanks to the report written by fr. João and sister Margaret Ormond on their joint trip, we became aware of what Vanunu was suffering: 18 years in jail, more than 11 in solitary confinement...   This year in the beginning of April we had another meeting with Stédile in which we talked about Mordechai Vanunu’s coming release and what we should/could do about it. We were particularly concerned about his life, as we had heard that one of the largest newspapers in Israel had made a poll about Vanunu’s future.  One of the 3 possibilities was “have him killed” and 30% of the readers chose this one. We contacted Juliana Bertolucci, a young journalist, member of the Dominican parish in São Paulo, who prepared a dossier about Vanunu. Stédile contacted PT (Workers’ Party) Senator Eduardo Suplicy, noted for his solidarity, and they decided to talk to Rabbi Henri Sobel, as the most important Israeli authority in São Paulo, since the consulate here has been shut down. Sobel agreed to receive us on Friday, 23 April and a delegation was organized: Stédile and a group of young people from MST, Senator Suplicy, one of the advisors of PT Congressman Luis Eduardo Greenhalgh, Rose Nogueira of Tortura nunca mais (torture never again), Luis Bassegio of the large caucus Grito dos Excluidos (Cry of the Excluded People), 2 journalists: Juliana and Bia Barbosa, from news agency Carta Maior, besides fr.João and myself, from St.Dominic’s Solidarity Group. We had prepared a petition asking for total freedom and safety for Vanunu to be signed by all the members and delivered to Sobel; we had already managed to get the signature of Cardinal Arns: though retired he continues to be a major figure in Human Rights defense. Rabbi Sobel received us; Senator Suplicy introduced the members of the group, emphasizing that “justice” is one of the words most used in the Bible. Stédile commented that Vanunu had received the Alternative Nobel Peace Prize, the same that the MST had received. Since he was in prison, Stédile had been charged to go there to give it to him. Fr. João spoke about his visit last year and our concern for Vanunu’s safety asking Sobel to take our petition to the Israeli Embassy in Brasilia. Claudia, young MST member, gave Sobel a bouquet of white flowers as a symbol of peace and I emphasized the need to guarantee Vanunu’s life and gave him the petition. Finally Sobel said he would be our messenger, taking the petition to Brasilia. As we waited for the lift, fr.João told Sobel that many prophets in the Bible had been considered traitors... and that if the judgement of Vanunu could be considered ‘fair and just’, then the judgements of activists during the military dictatorship in Brazil – against which Sobel, Cardinal Arns, fr. João and many others had strongly protested – had also been just and fair!   We feel that one of the actions we can and must do is give visibility to the brave, significant and relevant actions of others, such as Vanunu, the three Dominican sisters imprisoned in the States and so many others. Thus one spreads the Good News of the Kingdom and obeys what Peter said about stating the reason for our hope (cf. 1 P. 3, 15). People like Mordechai Vanunu remind us of Abraham’s discussion with God (cf. Gn. 18, 22-32).
