PARA NO OLVIDAR
El lunes 17 de mayo del presente
año, 104 personas fallecieron trágicamente en el Centro Penal de San Pedro Sula.
Sin embargo, pareciera que con el pasar del tiempo, éste como tantos otros
acontecimientos que han matado la vida de tantas personas en esta ciudad, y en
general en todo el país, tiende a quedar en el olvido. Se puede percibir en el ambiente, en la gente
misma, un cierto cansancio, hastío, desánimo, y hasta un fuerte relativismo,
conformismo y desaliento ante estos hechos de violencia, de horror, de
denigración de la persona humana, en donde reina al fin y al cabo la injusticia
y la impunidad. San Pedro Sula se está convirtiendo en la ciudad del terror.
Hoy se habla muy poco acerca de esta
tragedia, y es tan obvio, pues la
noticia “ya no vende” para muchos medios de comunicación. Pareciera
que los intereses políticos y económicos “mueven” las noticias. Da
pena que los medios de comunicación social se utilicen de esta manera. Se percibe además, en el sentir de
muchos, que estos medios tienden a ser amarillistas y moralistas.
Preocupa también la respuesta y el
actuar de las autoridades, ya que pueden estar olvidando el hecho y no considerar la posibilidad de que esto
vuelva a suceder en este, o en cualquier otro centro penal. Sin embargo, lo acontecido es apenas uno de
tantos casos que pueden ir quedando en la impunidad, lo cual nos debe llevar a
abrir la “caja de Pandora”.
La muerte de estas 104 personas, desentraña en el fondo la situación
caótica en que se encuentra nuestro país. Las raíces que están produciendo
tanta muerte, tanta pobreza, tanta sangre derramada, tanta injusticia y
desintegración familiar, son otras.
La situación del país es mucho más grave de lo
que aparenta. Se habla que el gobierno está cayendo en servilismo a países
imperialistas. No es que no se rescate las acciones positivas que ha hecho,
pero tiene mucho peso lo que deja de hacer por la gran mayoría pobre de nuestro
país.
¿Cuándo se darán respuestas y acciones
efectivas a la situación actual que mantiene sumergida a Honduras en el desempleo, en estados
denigrantes los centros de salud, en una mala educación, en aumento acelerado
de la extrema pobreza? ¿Qué se habla hoy acerca del ALCA y el TLC? ¿Acaso no son
temas importantes que van a llevar al pueblo al desastre y a la ruina?
Cómo es posible que nuestro pueblo
no tome conciencia crítica de la realidad.
Muchos se afanan tanto por un simple
partido de foot-ball, una
diversión, sin caer en la cuenta que el crimen organizado sigue haciendo de las
suyas, y por otra parte, “como por
arte de magia” se incrementa el
costo de la gasolina. Esto lleva a
pensar que hay malas estrategias políticas y económicas que siguen sumergiendo al
país en la extrema pobreza, y como siempre el pueblo es quien “paga el
pato”, y los políticos y congresistas (menos mal que son los representantes
del pueblo) son los que llenan sus bolsillos.
Las respuestas que dan el presidente
y los alcaldes a tantas demandas y necesidades del pueblo, parecen ser solamente “tapa
agujeros”. Esto lleva a caer en la
cuenta de que el Gobierno toma al pueblo
como “a quien se le puede dar atol con el dedo”.
¿Es posible que sigamos en esta situación? ¿Hasta cuándo soportar tanta
iniquidad? ¿Hasta cuándo seguiremos aceptando leyes que solamente favorecen a
las elites pudientes de nuestro país? Se nos está hundiendo en la miseria, y
nos quedamos solo en lamentaciones o en
la indiferencia. ¿En dónde está la fuerza del pueblo? ¿Acaso no es cierto que
el pueblo es quien elige a sus gobernantes y congresistas, pero también es el pueblo quien tiene la potestad
de destituirlos cuando éstos no responden a cumplir sus promesas y obligaciones
(que tiene todo gobierno que se dice “democrático”), sino más bien
lo hunde en la miseria?
Estamos llamados como Iglesia a
asumir radicalmente el Evangelio. Apoyamos decididamente la carta de nuestros
obispos de San Pedro Sula, a propósito de la muerte de las 104 personas en el
centro penal de San Pedro. Sabemos que como
Iglesia, no podemos callar ante el dolor de tanta gente. Como Iglesia, seguimos el ejemplo de Cristo
Jesús que anunció una Buena Noticia de esperanza y de verdad, ante la mentira,
la impunidad, la injusticia, la opresión, la violencia. Debemos fomentar el
diálogo, el perdón, la reconciliación, la solidaridad con tanta gente que es
golpeada por el dolor, el hambre, la opresión, la muerte.
Por eso….“Es
necesario NO OLVIDAR”
Es necesario recuperar nuestra
memoria histórica, es necesario no dejar
pasar estos hechos que como tantos, van quedando en la impunidad. Un pueblo que tiene memoria histórica, es un
pueblo que tiene identidad, pero un pueblo que a menudo olvida, es un pueblo
que no trasciende históricamente. ¿Por qué tendemos a olvidar todos estos hechos que se van sumando
uno a uno, como una espiral de violencia interminable, que ya nadie puede
parar? ¿Es acaso el temor a denunciar la verdad lo que nos detiene? ¿Qué es en
sí lo que no nos permite luchar por la justicia, ni querer
construir una sociedad más humana, justa y fraterna con el esfuerzo y la
intervención de todos? La defensa de la vida y de la verdad nos llama a no
quedarnos callados, ni atados de pies y manos, ante los causantes de estos
hechos que atentan violentamente contra la vida humana. Apoyamos y nos solidarizamos con todas aquellas acciones y pronunciamientos
por parte de diversos sectores del país que se han alzado su voz y han manifestado
públicamente ante estas situaciones.
Apoyamos y nos solidarizamos con pronunciamientos y acciones de la Iglesia que lucha por la justicia y la
verdad en diversas maneras. Apoyamos a laicos y laicas, obispos,
sacerdotes, religiosos y religiosas, Delegados y Delegadas de la Palabra, catequistas,
todo cristiano y cristiana y en general
toda persona, que defiende la paz y el derecho a la vida y a la dignidad.
Creemos que es momento de mostrar
valentía y resistencia, desde la fuerza de la solidaridad, la unidad, el
diálogo con todos los sectores del pueblo, para hacer propuestas sugerentes y efectivas,
que digan al gobierno y congresistas cómo se debe tratar con lealtad y honestidad
los fondos del país y dar bienestar a todos los sectores por igual. Hoy queremos gritar: ¡Justicia ante la
corrupción! ¡Justicia ante la
impunidad! ¡Justicia, bienestar e
igualdad para todos!
A todo nuestro pueblo, a nuestra
Iglesia, le decimos: ¡AHORA ES CUANDO!

LEST WE FORGET
On
Monday, May 17, 2004, 104 persons died tragically in the Central
Prison of San Pedro Sula. Nevertheless
it appears that with the passage of time, this event, as well as so many other
occurrences that have seen so many people killed in this city, and in the
entire country, tends to remain forgotten. There is perceived in the
environment, in the people themselves, a certain tiredness, annoyance,
dejection, and even a strong relativism, conformism and discouragement in the
face of these actions of violence, horror, and denigration of the human person,
that in the end, injustice and impunity reign.
San Pedro Sula has been converted into a city of terror.
Today
very little is spoken about the tragedy, and it is obvious that “the news
is not told” now by many of the communications media. It seems that only
political interests and economics “make” the news. It is painful that the media of social
communications are used in this way. Moreover one perceives that many feel
these media now produce yellow journalism and moralistic journalism.
The
response and actions of the authorities is also worrisome, now that they can be
forgetful of the tragedy and not even consider the possibility that it could
reoccur here or in any other prison. Nevertheless, the event is only one of the
many cases which remain in obscurity, which may open “Pandora’s
box.” The death of 104 persons plumbs the depth of the chaotic situation
in which we find our country. The
reasons for so much death, so much poverty, so much spilled blood, so much
injustice and disintegration of the family, are others.
The
situation of the country is much more grave than is apparent. There is talk that the government is falling
into servility to imperialist countries.
It isn’t because no positive actions have been taken, but because
so much of the burden is left on the shoulders of the great majority of the
poor in our country.
When
will there be responses and effective actions to the real situation which keeps
Honduras submerged in unemployment, with infamously poor health centers, poor
education, and an accelerated growth of extreme poverty? What is being said today about ALCA (an expansion of NAFTA) and TLC(Free Trade
Treaty)? Are there any other proposals which will bring our people
to disaster and ruin?
How
is it possible that our people have no critical awareness of reality? Many are so excited by a simple soccer game,
a diversion, that they don’t realize that organized crime continues, or
think that the cost of gasoline rises “like magic.” It makes one think that the poor political
and economic strategies which continue to submerge the country in extreme
poverty, and as always, it is the people who pay the price, and the politicians
and elected officials ( at least they are elected representatives of the
people) who fill their pockets.
The
responses which the president and the mayors give to the many demands and needs
seem to be only “perforated hoses.”
It makes one realize that the government treats the people like
“those who would plug a dam with one finger”. Can we continue in
this situation? For how long can we
support this inquity? For how long will we continue to accept laws which only
favor the powerful elite in our country?
We are drowning in misery, and all we do is lament it or feign
indifference. Where is the power of the
people? Maybe it is not certain that the people elected their government and
representatives, but it is the people who have the power to impeach them when
they do not respond by fulfilling their promises and obligations (which all
governments called “democratic” have) but instead allow their
country to sink into misery.
We
are called as Church to radically assume the Gospel. We decidedly support the letter of our
bishops of San Pedro Sula, on the occasion of the death of 104 persons in the
Prison at San Pedro. We know that like
the Church, we cannot be silent when faced with the pain of our people. Like the Church, we follow the example of
Jesus Christ who announced the Good News of hope and truth, in the face of
untruth, impunity, injustice, oppression, violence. We must promote dialogue, pardon,
reconciliation, solidarity with so many people who are wounded by pain, hunger,
oppression, death.
To do this….”It is necessary that WE NOT FORGET.”
It
is necessary to restore our historical memory, it is necessary not to allow
these acts to remain unpunished. A
people who has an historical memory, is a people who has an identity, but a
people who often forgets is a people who does not rise historically. Why do we have to forget all these acts which
one by one add up, like a spiral of unending violence which so far no one can
stop? Are we detained by fear from
denouncing the truth? What is it that
does not permit us to fight for justice, nor want to construct a society more
humane, just and fraternal with the strength and intervention of all our
citizens? The defense of life and truth
calls us to not remain silent, nor with hands and feet tied, in the face of the
perpetrators of these acts who attempt violence against human life. We support and are in solidarity with all
such actions and pronouncements from diverse sectors of the country who have
raised their voices and publicly demonstrated against these situations. We support and are in solidarity with the
pronouncement and actions of the Church which struggles for justice and truth
in different ways. We support laymen and
laywomen, bishops, priests, women and men religious, delegates of the Word,
catechists, all Christians, and in general every person, who defends peace and
the right to life and dignity.
We
believe that this is the time to demonstrate courage and resistance, in the
power of solidarity, unity, and dialogue with all sectors of the people, to
make suggested and effective proposals, that may tell the government and
representatives that they ought to manage the funds of the country with loyalty
and honesty and provide well-being to all sectors of the country equally. Today we wish to shout: Let justice confront
corruption! Let justice confront
impunity! Justice demands well-being and
equality for all!
To
all our people, to our Church, we say: Now is the time!
