Esta será mi cuarta visita a los Estados Unidos, visita que siempre he disfrutado y que me ha enseñado mucho. Cuando de usted aprendimos a decir, "¡También tengo una familia en EE.UU.!"     En estos últimos meses me he encontrado a varias personas de los Estados Unidos, especialmente a las hermanas, y pude notar cómo éstas parecen apenadas, incluso avergonzadas, disculpándose por ser estadounidenses… Mi reacción siempre ha sido que: la situación actual también está llena de BUENAS NUEVAS, aunque me lo han tomado como una especie de amable generosidad fraterna y no como algo que en primer lugar ¡es simplemente verdad!.    Luego de uno de mis más recientes viajes, cuando regresé a Santa Sabina me encontré a uno de mis queridos hermanos italianos, Fr. Adriano, quien había pegado un cartel en mi puerta que expresaba un rechazo hacia 'Bush' en Roma. El cartel con la bandera de la paz  decía "No a Bush: con i pacifisti USA” (No a Bush: sí a los pacifistas de los Estados Unidos).    El cartel sintetiza lo que pienso respecto a las Buenas Nuevas del actual momento, y es que nos reconocemos como ‘uno’, juntos en el mismo barco, defendiendo la dignidad de todos los seres humanos contra el ‘Imperio’ que como siempre quiere dominar a toda la humanidad a través de la mentira, la guerra y el miedo.    Este es un momento especial para los estadounidenses, quizás más que en la época de la "guerra de Vietnam", o incluso porque viene después de la búsqueda espiritual realizada en ese momento.    Este es el tiempo para redescubrir que los Imperios mienten sistemáticamente de una manera "dogmática" para construirse y mantenerse, para "comprar los corazones y mentes de las personas". Dogmas como "el estilo de vida americano", "somos una democracia completa y funcionando, no como la ex-Unión Soviética, o el mundo árabe"…     Éste es el tiempo donde estamos descubriendo las verdades: que su sistema electoral está lejos de ser perfecto, que el gobierno miente y miente sistemáticamente... no paga por sus mentiras, no entra en crisis cuando la mentira es revelada.     El escándalo sexual de Clinton casi lo derrumba, mientras que las mentiras sistemáticas sobre la guerra en Irak no han llevado a esta administración a la misma crisis política. En el primer caso, una persona estaba involucrada y habría sido una derrota personal. En el segundo, el régimen entero está involucrado.     Estamos descubriendo la verdad, que usted (nosotros) no es (somos) una verdadera democracia, sino en el mejor de los casos una "democracia superficial" o como clásicamente se ha definido tan sólo una "democracia burguesa" lo cual significa que las personas pueden decidir libremente en las cosas menos importantes pero en los grandes problemas todo está predeterminado por el régimen, la elite. ¿No fue dicho ya por Martin Luther King? ¿Por los centenares que protestan todos los años -por lo menos desde 1989- contra la Escuela de las Américas (SOA)…?     Descubrimos ahora que la tortura es practicada por el ejército de los Estados Unidos. ¿Los que protestan por el SOA no dijeron que la tortura se enseñó sistemáticamente en las escuelas del ejército?     Esta es una ocasión para no leer (creer) la historia de los Estados Unidos de modo lineal univocal, cómo los Imperios nos enseñan. La historia está llena de tensiones, conflictos pero al ser enseñada por los Imperios es siempre tranquila, pacífica, progresiva, armónica…     Esta es una oportunidad única para recuperar a los héroes y heroínas reales, para celebrar y redescubrir el alma real de las personas de su país, para experimentar la "unidad" con la que ellos nos enseñan que es el "resto" del mundo, las personas que "no son libres como nosotros"… y para darse cuenta que de hecho la libertad tiene que ser construida por todas partes, en EE.UU. como en Irak, como en Brasil…esta es nuestra vocación divina y común …    Es un tiempo para recuperar la memoria de los mártires, como nuestras hermanas Ita Ford y Maura Clarke: el próximo año celebramos el 25 aniversario de su asesinato (2 de diciembre del 1980): los estadounidenses asesinados por querer e identificarse con muchos latinoamericanos…    El año pasado 4 hermanas dominicas estaban en prisión en los Estados Unidos por su posición contra las mentiras del sistema. La última vez que recuerdo a dominicos en prisión fue en Brasil en 1968 durante la dictadura militar.     ¡Algunos llamaron a estos hermanos y hermanas traidores!  ¿Quiénes son los patriotas? ¿Aquellos que de verdad aman a su país?   ¿Los verdaderos profetas que revelan que Dios ve su/nuestro país como "la viuda, el huérfano y el extraño" lo hacen?  ¿O los falsos profetas que están de acuerdo con los poderosos quienes dicen que "están haciendo lo mejor que pueden", "todo van bien", "todo es como se debe?"     Durante el régimen fascista de Franco, en España, Bartolomé de Las Casas fue considerado un traidor. Por haber escrito la historia de la conquista española desde el punto de vista de las víctimas, llamándolo "la destrucción de las Américas", fue acusado de ser antipatriótico: de haber difamado España.       El israelita Mordechai Vanunu, denunció al mundo que su país estaba construyendo armas nucleares, fue condenado como traidor y encarcelado durante 20 años, la mayor parte, en encierro solitario.     Cuando el ejército de los Estados Unidos conquistó Bagdad, nosotros -los promotores de Santa Sabina- estábamos haciendo una visita de solidaridad a las hermanas iraquíes en Pisa, Italia. En cuanto llegamos, nos dijeron que Bagdad había sido derrumbada, allí vi llorar a los tres estadounidenses que estaban con nosotros: Margaret Ormond, Jerry Stookey y Chrys McVey.     Todos, de nacionalidades diferentes, lloramos juntos: ¡todos habíamos sido derrotados! ¿Bartolomé de Las Casas fue realmente un traidor? ¿Vanunu es un traidor?  ¿Todos son traidores, o por lo menos algunos de nosotros?           Pienso que éste es en verdad un momento de kairos que nos hace conscientes de una buena nueva, algo que todavía no empieza, pero que durante mucho tiempo ha sido parte de su historia. Estoy hablando de las muchas formas de lucha contra la esclavitud. Esto me consternó mucho en visitas anteriores; la primera fue organizada por Margaret Galiardi y Edward van Merriemboer en 1988 y la segunda en 1995. En ambas me impresionó mucho todo lo que escuche hablar del "Ferrocarril Subterráneo", lo cual me recordó a las parteras y el Éxodo de Miriam.  ¡Los Estados Unidos tienen una larga historia de profetas del que ustedes deberían estar orgullosos!    1) Una larga historia de lucha contra la esclavitud.  2) en defensa de los derechos de las mujeres.   3) promover el uso de tan sólo el lenguaje, lenguaje inclusivo lo cual se relaciona con decir la verdad, según el mandamiento de Jesús que tu sí sea un verdadero sí y tu no, un no.    4) tenemos que aprender de muchos grupos en Defensa de los Derechos Humanos en los Estados Unidos, sobre el cabildeo, sobre cómo hacer las acciones significativas, acciones pertinentes contra el sistema, en favor de los pobres. Esto me recordó a Rahab, de Jericó –una mujer frágil, considerada una prostituta- quién les mostró a los hebreos la manera de atravesar las aparentemente insuperables y fuertes paredes de la ciudad.   5) en nuestra visita en 1988 aprendimos algo que ha demostrado ser revelador: en uno de los grupos, visitamos Washington DC, alguien nos dijo que tuviéramos cuidado para no convertirnos en "profesionales de la solidaridad", personas que dependen del dinero que reciben para hacer su trabajo en defensa de Derechos Humanos, de tal manera que no tienen interés real de cambiar esta situación.    ¡Este no es un momento para sentimientos de culpa, ni complejos de culpa!   ¡Esto es completamente inútil! Como dijo el mártir profeta de Sudáfrica, Steve Biko: porque te hacen sufrir y no hacen nada para acabar con el sufrimiento de la víctima.  Este es un tiempo para el ‘empoderamiento’ como usted dice, para poder escoger entre las "mentiras verdaderas" del faraón y la verdad liberadora de las parteras, Miriam, Moisés…    Es un momento para la gratitud. Las hermanas Iraquíes en un reciente encuentro de DSI dijeron:     "Agradecemos cada iniciativa de amor que ustedes han asumido en nuestro nombre… Su solidaridad con nosotros antes, durante y después de la guerra angloamericana… nos apoya para vivir decentemente, intensifica nuestra confianza en Dios y continúa nuestra misión sirviendo a nuestro pueblo perjudicado y herido por la guerra…  Estamos extremamente afligidos por amonestar a sus gobiernos.   Discernimos claramente entre ustedes y sus gobiernos."     Es tiempo para re-leer y tomar con seriedad la parábola de las diez muchachas (Mt 25,1-13) no basta con ser "buenos ciudadanos que se atienen a la ley"…    "Miren yo los envío a ustedes como ovejas en medio de lobos. Sean, pues, astutos  como serpientes, aunque también ingenuos como palomas" (Mt 10, 16)      ¡Esta verdad nos hará libres!    Éstos son los pensamientos y reflexiones que deseo compartir con ustedes, como una especie de preludio a mi visita…   ¡Como dije, estoy esperando encontrarme realmente con todos ustedes!   Su hermano, João Xerri OP Co-Promotor Dominicano Internacional de Justicia y Paz   _______________ * Sr. Judith Hilbing OP es la co-promotora nacional de Justicia y Paz de los Estados Unidos           LETTER TO JUDITH HILBING     Rome, 24 June 04, feast of St. John the Baptist,   Dear Judith* Dear Sisters and Brothers in the USA,   I am really looking forward to our coming JP meeting, in a few days. This will be my fourth visit to the States, visits I have always enjoyed and which have taught me a lot. As we learned from you to say, “I have family also in USA”!   During these last months I have met a number of people from the USA, especially sisters, and I noted they seemed sort of embarrassed, even ashamed, asking our forgiveness for being American… My reaction has always been that the present situation is also full of GOOD NEWS, but this has been considered as a sort of kind generosity/fraternity and not as something that is first of all true and just!   When I got back to Santa Sabina after one of my recent trips I found that one of my dear Italian brothers, fra Adriano, had plastered on my door a poster he had got in a demonstration against  ‘Bush’ in Rome. The poster with the peace flag said “No Bush - Con i pacifisti USA” (with the USA pacifists).   The poster synthesizes what I think is the Good News of this present moment, that we recognize each other as “one”, together in the same boat, defending the dignity of all human beings against the “Empire” that as always wants to dominate all humankind through lies, war and fear.   This is a special moment for the American people, perhaps more than in the time of “Vietnam war”, or even because it comes after the soul searching done at that time.   This is the time to rediscover that Empires lie systematically in a “dogmatic” way in order to build and maintain themselves, to “buy the hearts and minds of people”. Dogmas such as “American way of life”, “we are a full and functioning democracy, not like the USSR, the Arab world”… This is the time when we are discovering truths. The truth that your electoral system is far from perfect, that your government lies and lies systematically... It doesn’t pay for its lies, does not fall into a crisis when the lie is revealed. The purely personal Clinton sexual scandal nearly brought him down, while the systematical lies in relation to the Iraqi war haven’t brought the administration to the same deep political crisis. In the first case one person was involved and it would have been a personal defeat. In the second, the whole regime is involved. We are discovering the truth that you (we) are not a true democracy, but at best a “low intensity democracy” or as classically defined just a “bourgeois democracy”, which means that the people can decide freely on the less important things but on the big issues everything is predetermined by the regime, the elite. Wasn’t this said before by Martin Luther King? And by the hundreds who protest every year - at least since 1989 - against SOA (School of the Americas)…? We now find out that torture is practiced by US military. Did not the SOA protesters say that torture was systematically taught in military schools?   This is an occasion not to read (believe) the history of the USA in a linear univocal mode, as Empires teach us. History is full of tensions, conflicts but it is taught by Empires as if it was always calm, pacific, progressive, harmonizing… This is a unique opportunity to recuperate the real heroes and heroines, to rediscover and celebrate the real soul of the people of your country, to experience the “oneness” with what they teach us is the “rest” of the world, the people who “are not free like us”… and to become aware that in fact freedom has to be built everywhere, in USA as in Iraq, as in Brazil…this is our common divine vocation…   It is a time to recuperate the memory of martyrs, such as our sisters Ita Ford and Maura Clarke: next year we celebrate the 25th anniversary of their assassination (2 Dec.1980): North Americans killed for loving and identifying themselves with the lot of Latin Americans…   Last year we had 4 Dominican sisters in prison in the States for their stance against the lies of the system. The last time I remember we had many Dominicans in prison was in Brazil in 1968 during the military dictatorship. Some called these brothers and sisters traitors! Who are the patriots? Those who truly love their country? The true prophets who reveal that God sees their/our country as the “widow, orphan and stranger” do?  Or false prophets who agree with the powerful that “they are doing their very best”, “all goes well”, “everything is as it should”?   During the fascist regime of Franco, in Spain, Bartolomé de Las Casas was considered a traitor. Because of writing the history of the Spanish conquest from the point of view of the victims, calling it “destruction of the Americas”, he was accused of being unpatriotic: he vilified Spain. Israeli Mordechai Vanunu, who denounced to the world that his country was developing nuclear weapons, was condemned as traitor and imprisoned for 20 years, most of which in solitary confinement. When USA military conquered Baghdad, we – the promoters from Santa Sabina – were making a solidarity visit to the Iraqi sisters in Pisa - Italy. As soon as we arrived, they told us Baghdad had fallen and I saw the three North Americans who were with us: Margaret Ormond, Jerry Stookey and Chrys McVey, cry. All of us, from many different countries, cried together: we had all been defeated! Was Las Casas really a traitor? Is Vanunu a traitor? Are all, or at least some of us traitors?   I think this is a truly kairos moment, which makes us aware of a good news, something that has not begun now, but has long been part of your history. I am talking about the many forms of struggle against slavery. I was much struck by this in former visits, the first of which was organized by Margaret Galiardi and Edward van Merriemboer in 1988 and again in 1995. In both visits I was very much impressed by all I heard about the “Underground Railway”, which reminded me of the midwives and of Miriam in Exodus. The USA has a long history of prophetism of which you should be proud! 1) The long history of struggle against slavery. 2) In defence of the rights of women. 3) Promoting use of just language, inclusive language which is related to saying the truth, according to the command of Jesus may your yes be really yes and your no, no.  4) We have learnt from many different Human Rights Defence groups in the States about lobbying, about doing significant, relevant, pertinent actions against the system, in favour of the poor. This reminded me of Rahab, the woman from Jericho - frail, considered a prostitute - who showed the Hebrews the way through the apparently unsurpassable strong walls of the city. 5) In our 1988 visit we also learned something that has proven to be very eye-opening: in one of the groups we visited in Washington DC, somebody told us to beware of becoming “solidarity professionals”, people who depend upon the money they receive for their work in defence of Human Rights and so have no real interest in changing this situation.   This is not a moment for guilt feelings, guilt complex! This is absolutely useless! As the prophet/martyr from South Africa, Steve Biko, said, because it makes you suffer and does nothing to end the suffering of the victim. This is a time for “empowerment” as you say, so as to be able to choose between the “truthful lies” of the pharaoh and the liberating truth of the midwives, Miriam, Moses…   It is a moment for gratitude. The Iraqi sisters in a recent DSI meeting said: “We are grateful for every initiative of love you have taken on our behalf… Your solidarity with us before, during and after the Anglo-American war… supported us to live decently, deepen our trust in God and continue our mission in serving our people injured and hurt by war… We are extremely sorry for admonishing your governments. We clearly discern between you and your governments.”   It is time to re-read and take seriously the parable of the ten young women (Mt 25,1-13) It is not enough to be “good law abiding citizens”… “Look, I send you out like sheep among wolves.
