Queridos amigos:
Acaba de finalizar el
capítulo General de Cracovia. ¡Qué lastima que no pude participar en él por un
recurrente problema de mis ojos!
De haber permanecido en
el Capítulo, hubiera participado en la Comisión –en español- sobre La
Predicación, en la cual participó el hermano de Brasil, Marcos Belei, y que fue presidida por fray
José Luis de Miguel, de Chile, a quien admiro enormemente. La Secretaria para
esta Comisión fue la Hermana Mayte Merino, quien
también predicó el retiro a los Capitulares, junto a fray
Chris Mc Vey.
Esta Comisión trabajó muy
junto a la Comisión –en inglés- sobre La Predicación, en la cual
participó fray Timothy Radcliffe, presidida por fray Mike Deeb,
de Sudáfrica. Hace ya varios años que nuestro Grupo de Solidaridad “Santo
Domingo”, de Brasil, publicó las “Cartas desde la Cárcel”,
escritas por Mike.
Fray Jim Nuttall, de Paquistán, también
participó en esta Comisión: hemos servido juntos en la Comisión Internacional
de Justicia y Paz de la Orden al finalizar los años ochenta.
La Comisión realizó un
trabajo verdaderamente significativo. Algunos han dicho que es la parte central
de este Capítulo. Les invito a abrir el sitio: www.krakow2004.org para leer el Capítulo
II, De predicatione.
Es una meditación valiente y un “empujón” profético.
También les va a gustar la lectura de #65, una hermosa declaración sobre
nuestro hermano Gustavo Gutiérrez. En #46, el Capítulo ordenó al Maestro a
nombrar un Promotor Internacional de Justicia y Paz a tiempo completo, por la
relevancia de esta tarea para la Orden y para la sociedad. Esto ya fue
insinuado en el informe sobre JP que la hermana M. Therèse
Perdriault y un servidor habíamos preparado para el
Capítulo.
Hablé sobre este asunto
con el Maestro, fray Carlos Azpiroz,
a su regreso de Cracovia. Fui trasladado de Brasil a Roma para seis años, luego
de ser nombrado, en noviembre de 2001, Socio para América Latina y el Caribe.
Fui elegido para este servicio, después de un proceso de consultas con los
superiores de esta Región. Fui nombrado por el Maestro para este servicio, por
eso vine a Roma. Solamente asumí JP en mayo de 2002 porque mi antecesor
dimitió. Carlos dice que aunque no continúe como Co-Promotor
Internacional de JP, seguiré haciendo naturalmente esta tarea, porque es mi
modo de ser como dominico.
Como Socio participo en
el Consejo General de la Orden donde, de acuerdo con el Maestro, mis ideas
sobre género, discriminación, movimientos populares son importantes y necesarios.
Yo lo lamento, porque como Ustedes lo saben bien, es el ministerio de JP el que
amo. Pero estoy realmente feliz de que
tengamos, otra vez, un Promotor de JP a tiempo completo. El Maestro dice que
consultará con M. Therèse, la otra Co-Promotora, además de otras personas, para buscar mi
sucesor. Obviamente, continuaré como Co-Promotor de
JP hasta que esa persona sea designada.
La dimensión JP de
nuestra vocación dominicana fue indudablemente fortalecida en este Capítulo
General.

Dear

The Krakow General Chapter has just ended. What a pity I couldn't
participate... because of my recurring eye problem...
If I had stayed I would have been in the Spanish Commission on
Preaching, in which Brazilian brother Marcos Belei took part and was
presided by brother Jose Luis de Miguel, from Chile, whom I greatly
admire. The secretary for this commission was sr. Mayte Merino, who also
preached together with brother Chrys McVey the retreat to the
capitulars.
This commission also worked together with the English Commission on
Preaching, in which brother Timothy Radcliffe took part and was presided
by brother Mike Deeb, from South Africa. Many years ago our St.Dominic's
Solidarity Group, from Brazil, published the Letters from Prison,
written by Mike... Brother Jim Nuttall, from Pakistan, also participated
in this commission: we served together on the International Justice and
Peace Commission of the Order in the late eighties.
The commission did a truly significant work. Some are already saying it
is the central part of this Chapter.

In # 46, the Chapter ordains the Master to appoint a full time
International Promoter of Justice and Peace, because of the relevance of
this work for the Order and for society. This was at least insinuated in
the report on JP that sr. M.Therese Perdriault and I prepared for the
Chapter.
I talked about this with the Master, brother Carlos Azpiroz, upon his
return from Krakow.
I was transfered from Brazil to Rome, having been nominated in November
2001 socius for Latin America and the Caribbean, for 6 years. I was
chosen for this service after a process of consultation with the
superiors of this region. I was appointed by the Master for this and
this is why I came. I only took over JP (May 2002) because my
predecessor resigned.
Carlos says that even if I will not continue to be JP International
Co-Promoter I will naturally continue to do this ministry... because
this is my way of being a Dominican.
As socius I participate in the General Council of the Order, where
according to the Master my ideas about gender, discrimination, popular
movements... are important and necessary.
I am sorry, because as you well know it is the JP ministry that I love.
But I am really happy that we will once again have a full time JP
Promoter.
The Master says that in order to find the JP Co-Promoter he will
consult Marie Therese, the other Co-Promoter, besides other persons.
I obviously will continue as JP Co-Promoter until my successor is
appointed.
The JP dimension of our Dominican vocation was undoubtedly strengthened
in this General Chapter.
