The exercises and training will concentrate on developing this concept. The Magical Detour is designed as an interactive guided tour in around the city of Cannes. Members of the Master Class, class instructors and additional artists will form animation teams, appearing in designated activity points on the tour route. The audience will both watch, and participate in, the presentation. The tour will be open to the general public and will be presented in the final days of the workshop. To achieve this goal, you will work as a Clown Performer in an ensemble with other professionals. You will learn how to relate to the audience in unpredictable and spontaneous situations, to improvise and to adapt, in order to give the gift of laughter to an unsuspecting public. You will explore the role of the comic actor as a social warrior, laughter terrorist and mercenary of humor. You will be come a "Knight of the Clown Table" - a red nose his armor; a smile his weapon; injustice and tyranny his enemy - on a crusade to confirm hope and promote global freedom. To some it may seem a cliché that "The world is a stage and each must play his part", but for the clown it is the truth. From 1971 through 1990 Jango Edwards developed a method for students to explore comic formulas, rediscover the art of clowning and embrace its social value. Through research, education and an open exchange of selected improvisational exercises, comedy styles, games and acting methods, shared with other clown technique instructors, Jango developed a "Clown Theory" workshop based on a series of three ascending parts. The success of the "Clown Theory" series created the need for a more personalized and intensive training workshop for the professional clown performer. From this demand the "Clown Theory Master Class" was founded and developed by Jango Edwards together with Peter Ercolano and Nana Sapey. A group of international instructors were enlisted, each specialized in a specific comic technique. They function as a comedy dream team, offering a multi lingual course. Since the "Clown Theory Master Class" was inaugurated in 1995 at the "First International Clown Festival" in Leukerbad, Switzerland it has been conducted annually in numerous international events in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Austria, Holland, India, Brazil and the United States. Each year we present a different aspect of the clown art, so that the class is always a new experience in the learning process, both for students who have attended previous master classes as well as for first time initiates. Over the last years the Master Class themes have been: 1999 – in Cannes we presented a full stage musical "Hollywood Express" produced during the 7 day class session. 2000 - teams of actors created and performed selected street theater events including the surprise attack on the Cannes Croissette bathers by Africa's one and only all white tribe "The Fucawees", a 10.000 cream pie fight and a 3 hour safari expedition to uncover and capture the world’s only "Singing Palm Tree". 2001 - at the "Montreux Festival du Rire" the focus was on an animation ensemble production. 2002 + 2003 we expanded our faculty of international instructors and in doing so we were able to offer a unique experience to class members. In addition to the classes by individual instructors and team teaching events, each master class student was assigned a theme to write, film, cast and direct a 1 minute comedy short based on the cosmic law of comedy, the 3 gag routine. This year again the actors will be required to attempt the same assignment but with a different theme. It must be a political ad campaign created for a fictional political party or candidate (for example: America – you can not pray in school but let’s put a bible in every hotel). As part of our permanent curriculum we will continue to offer each student one on one private master class sessions with an individual instructor.
