Feminist Organizational Development Manager / AWID / Home-based /
Closing date: June 09, 2003.
BACKGROUND:
The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is an
international membership organization that connects, informs and
mobilizes people and organizations committed to gender equality,
sustainable development and women's human rights. AWID’s membership
now includes a world-wide network of policy-makers, funders,
development practitioners, researchers, academics, students,
activists, business people, and more. Since 1982, AWID has been
providing a forum for discussion and debate around gender equality
and development in the context of global change. We have become a
leader in critically analyzing the impacts of international trends on
women's rights and in advocating for policy change and
accountability.
AWID PROGRAMS:
AWID uses the three program approaches to inform, connect and
mobilize its membership. These include:
1. AWID’s International Forum on Women’s Rights and Development
creates a rare space for dialogue and coalition-building across sectors,
disciplines, regions, issues, and generations. It provides an unparalleled
opportunity to develop strategies, share ideas, build skills, and provide
support all to advance gender equality and social justice. In fact, the Forum
has now grown to be the largest regular gathering of gender equality advocates
outside of the U.N. system. Over 1,300 leaders, scholars, and practitioners
gathered in Mexico from October 3-6, 2002 for the 9th International Forum to
consider not only the economic, but also the political, social, ecological and
cultural implications of globalization. AWID’s next International Forum
will be held in 2005.
2. Thematic Workshops allow for a deepening of the debate and
sharpening of the strategies through issue specific workshops with
smaller groups of participants on critical issues. They follow
similar principles of the Forum (e.g. interdisciplinary, analytical
and strategizing, and intergenerational).
3. AWID’s Strategic Communications program provides the most
practical, accessible as well as multi-perspective information and
analyses to our diverse membership. To do so, AWID uses rich
interactive e-mail lists and discussions backed up by a high quality,
multi-lingual website and print communications (primers, briefings,
and books). Ongoing before and after the Forum, these communications
continue to build bridges between sectors, regions, ages, and
disciplines.
AWID CROSS-CUTTING THEMES:
AWID has four cross-cutting themes for these programs: Young Women
and Leadership, Feminist Organizational Development, Gender Equality
and New Technologies and Women's Rights and Economic Change.
FEMINIST ORGANIZATIONAL DEVELOPMENT (FOD) THEME MANAGER:
The purpose of this position is to direct the "Feminist
Organizational Development" (FOD) theme program. This program
focuses on the research, advocacy, planning, and management
strategies needed to transform women’s organizations to be more
strategic and effective. Similarly, it looks at how to improve our
work across diversities, balance priorities, and co-ordinate our
strategies and actions.
The OBJECTIVES of this program would be to:
a. Identify and share innovative strategies to strengthen
organizational capacity; explore effective organizational growth and
sustainability models (in particular on how to do this is a
"feminist" way).
b. Support alliance and movement building, amongst women’s groups and
across issues and differences and as part of a larger movement for social
change. c. Examine ways to support and strengthen feminist leadership. d.
