What’s the background to the shared priority on healthier communities?
Promoting
healthier communities and narrowing health inequalities is one of the
priorities for local public service delivery shared by central and local
government. This and the other shared priorities – on improving the
quality of life for older people; safer and stronger communities; children and
young people; and sustainable communities and transport – will be
embedded in comprehensive performance assessment from 2005. The shared
priorities will also underpin the development of local area agreements, a new
approach to improving coordination between central and local government and its
partners, to be piloted in 2005/06.
The
Shared Priority Project, sponsored by the Local Government Association and the
Department of Health, brings together 12 lead authorities with the aim of
generating learning that will enable all councils to work with their primary
care trusts (PCTs) and regional partners to promote healthier communities and
reduce health inequalities.
