SURVIVOR RECUPERATING
Monday, April 30th 2007.-The
woman who made a courageous trek through mountainous jungle terrain to safety
after her plane crashed is presently recovering at a city hospital.
Bernice Perreira who walked through hostile terrain
with her dead baby in her arms and her little son by her side after the Air
Services Limited (ASL) aircraft that she was travelling in crashed, is
presently in a stable condition though one of her legs is still hurting her.
The ASL aircraft, a Britten Norman Islander [also
known as a BN -2] had lost contact with the control tower at Ogle just prior to
its scheduled touchdown at Kopinang - 170 miles away - on Wednesday afternoon. After
intensive searching both from the air and on foot by a search team, a group of
schoolboys spotted the woman on a trail on Thursday. The crash site was eventually
located and the bodies of those who perished recovered.
Three other persons including the pilot, Rohan Sharma,
another passenger, Earnestine Moses, and Perreira's three-month-old daughter,
Brittney, died.
Perreira was returning home to Kopinang having come to
the city to seek treatment for Arnold who had injured his hand. Stabroek News
understands that prior to returning home on that fateful day, Perreira was so
anxious to get to Kopinang that they did not eat before leaving and so they
were hungry for the entire time that they walked through the jungle.
Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Carolyn Rodrigues
visited Perreira in the hospital on Saturday.
