De tal cosmovisión se nutre y crece el dinámico desarrollo que revela al hombre como la entidad que, aliada con dos potencias divinas, impulsa a éstas a la acción, y les proporciona, con su cuerpo mismo, la materia para la creación del universo. Dicha visión fue hallada en un antiguo texto cuya autenticidad es probada mediante la existencia de innumerables obras plásticas que con él coinciden y lo ilustran. El texto de referencia es la Histoyre du Mechique, manuscrito francés del siglo XVI. Ahí se lee cómo dos Dioses, luego de haber hecho bajar al ser humano a la superficie de las aguas sin creador conocido, y tras advertir en él ciertas partes de naturaleza serpentina, sienten despertar en sí mismos la necesidad de crear; a fin de satisfacerla, se transmutan ambos cada uno en una gran serpiente; descienden entonces, así trasmutados, hasta el ser humano. Lo asen por pies y manos y, oprimiéndolo por en medio, lo dividen en dos; con las mitades así obtenidas crean la tierra y el cielo. Así, el hombre, motor y materia inicial de la creación del mundo, asume en lo sucesivo su función creadora como obligación permanente. La creación no es un hecho instantáneo, sino un proceso interminable. El hombre ha de cumplirla sin interrupción, tomando sobre sí el deber de encaminar hacia su perfección lo inicialmente creado. El propósito de este Museo, es demostrar que en la cultura antigua mexicana, desde su principio hasta su término, se expresa esta misma idea cosmogónica que la rige y le da sentido superior. Es, en su totalidad, la figura de un ser humano, una mujer, varias de cuyas partes se ven sustituidas por otras propias de la serpiente. Así, en el lugar de su cabeza se encuentran, enfrentadas, las de dos serpientes. Estas, descendiendo, se proyectan hacia el extremo de sus brazos y ocupan el lugar de sus manos. Más abajo, convertidas en su cinturón, se transforman en una sola con dos cabezas. De ese cinturón descienden, multiplicadas, en una falda; a lo largo de esta enlazan sus cuerpos, y en su borde alternan sus cabezas y sus colas. Por último vuelven a ser las dos de la cima. Ahora, ondulando, bajan entre las piernas. Ahora, entre los pies, dirigen sus cabezas en sentidos opuestos. En el monumento, pues, aparecen una mujer y dos serpientes que, proyectándose hacia abajo, forman sus manos, su cinturón, su falda, y por fin, vuelven a ser ellas mismas, encerrando desde abajo, como lo hacen en lo más alto, la figura de la mujer. Mírense, además, las articulaciones de sus hombros y sus codos. Allí aparece un modo de máscaras; ellas tienen ojos y bocas. Mírense sus pies; se encontrará en ellos, figurada en volumen pleno, la máscara que cubre sus hombros y sus codos. Los antiguos mexicanos, para dar expresión escrita a sus ideas, no usaron signos alfabéticos sino formas plásticas cuya lectura directa nos está todavía vedada. Para comprender su significado necesitamos de un texto escrito con signos que conozcamos. Ese texto existe y su nombre es Histoyre du Mechique. En ese texto se narra cómo dos dioses, transformados en serpientes, se unieron a un ser humano, y con su cuerpo, que dividieron por la mitad, crearon la tierra y el cielo, esto es, el universo entero. Esa unión, pues, representa la máxima condensación del poder creador, en el punto preciso en que va a ser ejercido. Algo similar a aquella masa y temperatura con las cuales la materia pudo, al explotar, originar el universo. Pero hay más: en la base de este monumento está una imagen de Tláloc, esculpida en relieve no para ser vista, sino para integrar el significado cabal de su sentido. Todos sabemos que el labio superior de la boca de éste es ancho, y que sus extremos adquieren formas diversas. Este labio, como se demostrará más adelante, representa dos cabezas de serpiente enfrentadas, igual que en la cima del monumento. Además, sobre el cuerpo de la imagen en relieve, aparece un símbolo: un quincunce rodeado por una banda circular estriada, que, como más tarde se explicará, representa así mismo el momento previo a la creación universal. Tenemos, pues, que tal momento está representado esencialmente, por la unión de dos serpientes y un ser humano, ya sea su rostro, ya alguna otra de sus partes. Cuando se trata de su rostro, su unión con las serpientes se figura en el labio superior. La hallaron el 13 de agosto de 1790, no lejos del palacio virreinal, al remover la tierra, preparándola para recibir el empedrado de la Plaza Mayor de la ciudad de México. La sacaron de allí y la llevaron, primero, al sobredicho palacio, junto a una de cuyas puertas la colocaron; luego la movieron otra vez, para ponerla en un patio de la Universidad. En ese lugar ocurrió algo que los españoles, al principio, no pudieron entender: los indios, habiéndola reconocido, acudieron a ella. Los españoles consideraron que lo hacíamos imitándolos, porque a ellos el monumento les parecía interesante; después, al advertir que insistíamos en visitarla, nos prohibieron que lo hiciéramos. A escondidas, a horas inusitadas, continuamos haciéndolo; le llevamos ofrendas, llamas, flores, copal. Conocieron entonces que nos era objeto de veneración. Se preocuparon por sus posesiones y la salvación de nuestras almas. Volvieron a enterrarla, ahora en la Universidad. Permaneció allí hasta los años iniciales del siglo XIX, cuando Humboldt vino a México; accediendo a petición suya, la desenterraron otra vez, y otra vez la enterraron cuando él supuso haberla estudiado. Volvió a estar bajo tierra hasta 1892, año donde por la celebración del IV centenario del llamado Descubrimiento de América, regresó a la luz, entonces para ser exhibida en la Sección de México de la Exposición Histórico-Americana de Madrid. Una vez devuelta ocupó un sitio escogido en nuestro Museo Nacional, desde cuya puerta era visible en su fundamental importancia.
